Jonathan Majors plays Killian Maddox, an ambitious bodybuilder who lives with his grandfather (Harrison Page). He is always consumed by the thought of popularity and renown and pushes his body to the limit, limiting his ties to others. While Killian prepares for a major competition, he tries to bond with co-worker Jessie (Haley Bennett) and his bodybuilding hero Brad Vanderhorn (Mike O’Hearn).

As Killian begins to push himself harder his body begins to betray him as his physicians strongly advise against his excessive steroid use. As Killian’s mind begins to close in on itself, the borders between reality and the world Killian sees begin to blur into a deadly reality.

This is a movie where a lot is left unsaid or unexplained. Clearly Killian has some issues to go through, but what those issues really are remains unclear. He’s a big hulking giant of a man but he has the demeanor of a child at times. He doesn’t know how to hold a normal conversation, yet he can speak beautifully when a subject interests him or when he is angry. The less we know about him in the past makes him that much more interesting, but also leaves a big void of comprehension for the character.

His disconnection spans the full range of personalities he meets. From the well-intentioned sweetness of Jessie to the bluntness of Killian’s grandfather, from the empathy of his counselor (the always amazing Harriet Sansom Harris) to even a prostitute playing a role (a one-scene wonder in Taylour Paige), Killian is not tapping into any aspect of life correctly. He’s a man who has trained his body so much, it’s the only thing he can control. Everything else he doesn’t understand, or doesn’t care to understand. He’s a guy who thinks he deserves a legacy but doesn’t understand why no one cares.

The supporting acts do a good job of supporting what Majors is doing. Bennett is sweet as can be until it turns to terror. Harris also tries to figure out who Killian really is without pushing her bounds. Even someone like O’Hearn makes a really stock character something that haunts and resonates. It’s a good cast all around.

It’s a difficult film to see, no question about it. Of course. But not all movies are supposed to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside as the credits roll. Bynum pushes this story to the extremes of its possibilities even as you feel the movie shouldn’t be going in that particular path. The story can be hard to buy into yet the towering performance from the towering actor keeps things on the rails enough to offer something uncomfortable but unforgettable.
